Saturday Portrait and Figure Class
Our Saturday portrait sessions are a great opportunity to learn the CSS drawing method, and a chance to work with some of Philly’s finest figure and portrait models. During this month-long class you will learn our method for creating an accurate block-in with an emphasis on gesture and likeness by focusing on shapes at the picture plane, and then transitioning to a more three-dimensional mindset before leaving that preparatory stage. Students will then proceed to model that drawing in graphite or oil paint. You may choose to draw the full figure or a portrait. All skill levels welcome.
Four Saturdays in a row (rolling enrollment), 10:00am – 3:30pm
$250 per month
Evening Cast Drawing and Block-in
Cast drawing is a centuries old, proven practice that builds a strong skill set that one will find useful in representing any subject, and was considered foundational training for all realist artists prior to the 20th century. Whether you are an absolute beginner or an experienced artist looking to hone your drawing skills, our cast drawing class will teach you a powerful step-by-step procedure for artistic problem solving. You will draw from plaster casts of classical sculpture, learning how to see shapes accurately, think three-dimensionally in line, and render with a high degree of fidelity. The concept of light on form, as well as other conceptualizations of nature will be explored.
Once your technique is sound you may move on to a cast painting, where you will learn how to paint form in oil. You may also choose to start training by creating faithful copies of master drawings, exclusively from the Charles Bargue Drawing Course. Such copy work was a standard introduction for artists of the past and students will find it a welcome transition to drawing from life. All skill levels welcome.
Monday through Thursday, 6:30 – 9:30 pm.
Instruction on Mondays and Wednesdays.
$225 per month
